Broker’s Comments
The 1988 Swan 36 MkII is one of German Frers’ most admired designs for Nautor Swan, combining elegant lines, excellent sailing manners, and the reassuring build quality for which the yard is renowned. MARKOVA is a well-maintained example that has benefited from consistent ownership and significant recent investment.
Her timeless profile, balanced hull shape, and practical deck layout continue to make the Swan 36 MkII a highly desirable yacht for owners seeking a capable and rewarding cruiser with genuine pedigree. Below decks, the beautifully crafted teak interior offers comfortable accommodation with a bright and inviting saloon, thanks to the distinctive wraparound skylight design. Accommodation is arranged with a forward double cabin, a generous saloon, an aft cabin, and a practical galley, making her well-suited to both weekends away and longer cruising.
MARKOVA has benefited from a programme of sensible upgrades over the years, including replacement rod rigging in 2018, a Volvo Penta D1-30 engine installed in 2008, upgraded navigation equipment, and a versatile sail wardrobe including both cruising and performance-oriented sails.
Particularly noteworthy are the extensive osmosis treatment works carried out by Northney Yacht Repair between December 2024 and May 2025. These works included double peeling of the hull, rebuilding, and epoxy sheathing of affected areas, followed by fairing, epoxy priming, and antifouling. This represents a substantial recent investment in the yacht’s condition and ongoing maintenance.
The Swan 36 MkII remains a hugely respected design, admired for its quality construction, rewarding sailing characteristics, and, above all, Swan’s unmistakable elegance. MARKOVA presents an opportunity to acquire a classic Swan that has benefited from knowledgeable ownership and considerable recent expenditure.
Owner’s Comments
MARKOVA has been my pride and joy for the last 20 years, and I consider my ownership of her to have been a true privilege.
In addition to club racing in and around the Solent – where she won HISC’s The Nab Cup in 2012, 2023, 2024, and 2025 – MARKOVA has competed in Swan European Regattas organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Swan Rendezvous organized by the Guernsey Combined Yacht Clubs in St Peter Port, and both the Dartmouth and Fowey Regattas.
The Swan Classic by Frers Association is open to owners of Nautor’s Swan yachts such as MARKOVA, aiming to share information on the iconic Swans designed by German Frers and built by Nautor’s Swan between 1981 and 1990.
Away from the racecourse, I have thoroughly appreciated MARKOVA’s “long legs” in cruising mode. The holidays spent aboard her in France, the Channel Islands, and the West Country were incredibly special. Sailing MARKOVA upwind when she is “in the groove” in a strong breeze remains, in my view, the ultimate sailing experience.
